Keeping up to date and quality assurance
Keeping up to date
Registered with The Royal College of Physicians for Continuous Professional Development; exceed the minimum annual credit requirements every year. Fully revalidated in general medicine and gastroenterology (2019).
Maintaining performance
An experienced and expert endoscopist , having carried out over 8000 procedures. Success rate in colonoscopy is over 95% and complication rate is less than 1 in 1000 procedures. Performance in endoscopy regularly audited; involved in several departmental audits, including the use of azathioprine and methotrexate in inflammatory bowel disease, the outcome of endoscopy for gastrointestinal bleeding, and the complications of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy
Teaching and training
Tutor, medical undergraduates from the Royal Free and University College London Medical School; twice cited as a ‘valued teacher’.
In 1997 designed the day release programme for North East Thames’ trainees ‘Day Release’ Training in Gastroenterology, and this is still in use.
Research and publications
Research into IBD has always been a core component of my work. I am clinical lead for research in gastroenterology at University College London Hospitals, and am always keen to offer patients entry into clinical trials if suitable.
I was chair of the UK clinical research network from 2008 to 2013 and now head the UK national IBD registry, which is designed to improve national standards of care through better recording of routine clinical details.
I have authored two books and a number of research papers, as detailed below:
Books
Practical Gastroenterology: ed. Stuart Bloom. Published by Martin Dunitz, 2002. 45 authors (680 pp)
